About the Hungry Jack's Storm inspired by Skittles

The Storm inspired by Skittles at Hungry Jack's is $7.25 and 2,503 kJ. Soft serve with fruit lolly pieces and flavour blended through it.

Fruit and dairy is an unusual pairing, and the result reads as confectionery rather than as fruit. That is the intention rather than a shortcoming: the whole point is that it tastes like the lollies, and lollies do not taste like fruit either.

Texturally it is the most interesting Storm, because the lolly pieces stay hard. Where Flake melts and Oreo softens, hard boiled sweets do not change at all in cold dairy. The last spoonful has exactly the same texture as the first.

At 2,503 kJ it sits just below the Biscoff Storm at 2,610 kJ and above the two cheaper Storms.

At $7.25 it is priced with the Biscoff version, above the Oreo and Flake.

Who it suits: children, and anyone who wants a dessert that is deliberately not sophisticated. It is the loudest thing on the desserts menu.

Compare against the Shake inspired by Skittles at $6.40, which is the drinkable version and the sweetest item on the whole menu.

How to Make the Hungry Jack's Storm inspired by Skittles at Home?

The problem with fruit lollies in dairy is that the acid can split it. Folding cold and serving fast avoids that entirely. Makes 4 servings.

Tips

  • Cold and fast. Fruit acid in warm dairy splits it, and there is no fixing a split ice cream.
  • Half chopped, half whole. Chopped pieces flavour the mixture; whole ones give you something to find.
  • Make it the same day. This is the one dessert here that does not keep.

Variations

  • Blended with milk it becomes a Shake inspired by Skittles.
  • Chocolate biscuits instead give a Storm OREO.
  • Sour lollies instead of sweet ones is a genuine improvement for adults.

Serve immediately with a spoon. The loudest dessert you can make from this menu and the one children ask for.
