Fried Against Grilled at Hungry Jack's

The gap is large and worth knowing. Classic Jack's Fried Chicken at $10.80 carries 2,843 kJ. Grilled Chicken at $9.45 carries 1,465 kJ, which is roughly half. The fried version brings considerably more protein at 36.1g against 22.4g, so it is not simply a worse choice; it is a different one. Fried for protein, grilled for lightness.

The clearest illustration is the Napoletana pair. Both carry the same bacon, tomato and herb sauce and melted cheese, and the only difference is the chicken. The Napoletana Jack’s Fried Chicken runs 3,250 kJ while the Napoletana Grilled Chicken runs 1,761 kJ. Same toppings, same idea, half the energy. Carbs fall from 62.7g to 33.5g because the crumb, the flour and the frying oil all disappear at once.

Within the fried range the fillet is identical across every burger. Classic and Spicy at $10.80 differ only in the sauce; the Cheesy Bacon versions at $12.26 add eye bacon and melted cheese on top. The brioche bun is used throughout, because a sesame seed bun against a crumbed fillet puts crust on crust and eats dry.

The odd one out is the Chicken Royale at $13.95, which uses a long thin fillet with a fine crisp coating rather than a thick craggy crumb. Its protein figure of 11.5g is the lowest in the range by a distance, and its carbs of 41.7g are among the highest, which tells you it is a bread and coating item more than a chicken one. It has been on the menu longer than anything else here, which is its own argument.

The Hungry Jack's Chicken menu is really two menus sharing a shelf: crumbed fillets fried to order, and breast fillets cooked on the grill. Ordering across that line changes the kilojoule figure more than any topping ever will.
