The plant based patty is engineered to imitate beef and it is flame grilled on the same open flame the beef goes over, which is where the smoky note comes from. A Plant Based Whopper at $12.35 carries 24.6g of protein and costs exactly the same as the beef Whopper at $12.35, which is unusual since most chains charge a premium for the plant based version.
The veggie patty is a different thing entirely: corn, capsicum and carrot, and it is not trying to taste like beef. A Veggie Whopper Cheese carries 17.6g of protein against 61.9g of carbs, which is what a vegetable patty looks like on a nutrition panel. It tastes sweet from the corn and carrot rather than savoury, and people who prefer it prefer it for exactly that reason.
The vegan question needs a direct answer. None of these are vegan. Every patty is cooked on shared equipment with the beef, the cheese is dairy, and the veggie patties typically contain egg as a binder. Hungry Jack's treats the range as vegetarian and makes no vegan claim, and neither does this page. If you avoid animal products entirely, shared cooking surfaces are the deciding factor rather than the ingredient list.
One number worth knowing: doubling a vegetable patty adds almost nothing. The Double Veggie Whopper Cheese at 2,280 kJ is essentially identical to the single at 2,277 kJ, and protein moves from 17.6g to 17.2g. What the second patty adds is bulk and texture, filling out a full size bun that a single vegetable patty leaves feeling bread heavy. That is a real reason to order it, and it is not a nutritional one.
Two different things sit on the Hungry Jack's Vegetarian & Vegan menu and the difference matters: the plant based patties are vegan by recipe, the veggie ones are not. Cheese and mayonnaise are the usual reason.
No. The patty is plant based but it is flame grilled on the same equipment as the beef, so Hungry Jack's treats it as a vegetarian option rather than a certified vegan one.
No. The plant based range is built on a vegan patty, but a burger ordered with cheese or mayonnaise is vegetarian rather than vegan. The Plant Based Whopper at $12.35 is the standard starting point.
