Classic combo of a flame-grilled Aussie beef patty topped with cheese, crunchy pickle, mustard and tomato sauce, served on a freshly toasted sesame seed bun. Basic - but brilliant.
The Hungry Jack's Cheeseburger is $5.90 and 1,347 kJ, which makes it one of the cheapest hot items on the Australian menu and about a seventh of an adult daily intake. Hungry Jack's describes it as basic but brilliant, and that is a fair account of it: a flame grilled beef patty, a slice of cheese, pickles, mustard and tomato sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun. No salad, no mayonnaise, nothing else.
Leaving the salad off is what makes it work rather than what makes it lesser. Without lettuce and tomato there is no cold layer and no water, so the whole burger stays hot and the bun stays dry. The mustard and pickles carry all the sharpness on their own, and against a small patty they are loud enough to do it. The result tastes more concentrated than a Whopper rather than blander.
The proportions are the other half of it. A smaller patty in a standard bun means the bread to beef ratio is high, which is exactly why this burger holds together to the last bite and why it travels well. A Cheeseburger eaten fifteen minutes after buying it is still a Cheeseburger. A Whopper in the same situation is not.
At 619mg of sodium and 16g of fat it is also the modest end of the menu by some distance, which makes it the burger to reach for when the rest of the day has already been heavy. Protein sits at 15.8g, so it does the job of a light meal rather than a snack.
Who it suits: anyone ordering for a child who is past the kids menu, anyone building a cheap order, and anyone who wants a burger rather than a project. Two Cheeseburgers still come in under the price of most single premium burgers on the board, which is the calculation a lot of regulars quietly make. Cheeseburger calories are the lowest of any beef burger here, which is worth knowing if you are watching the number.
Pair it with Small Thick Cut Chips at $2.00 for a full meal under a tenner, or step up to the Double Cheeseburger at $8.35 when one patty is not enough.
One Cheeseburger is 15% of the 8,700 kJ average adult daily intake. Figures are per serve as published by Hungry Jack's.

A Cheeseburger is the easiest thing on this menu to get right at home, because there is nothing to hide behind. Thin patty, hard sear, cheese while it is still on the heat. Makes 4 servings for a fraction of the $5.90 each you would pay at the counter.
Serve straight from the pan with chips. This is the one burger on the menu that is genuinely better eaten standing at the bench than sitting down.

$5.90, which makes it one of the cheapest hot items on the menu. The Penny Pinchers range has a handful of items below it, but among the beef burgers this is close to the floor.
1,347 kJ, or about 15% of the 8,700 kJ average adult daily intake. It carries 15.8g of protein, 16g of fat and 619mg of sodium, all of which are the lowest of any beef burger on the menu.
It is built that way on purpose. Without salad there is no cold layer and no moisture, so the whole burger stays hot and the bun stays dry. The mustard and pickles carry the sharpness instead.
The sauce. A BBQ Cheeseburger at $5.95 swaps tomato sauce for smoky BBQ sauce, which trades the sharpness for sweetness.
It is one of the better numbers on the menu on energy for the money. Two of them still land under the price of most premium single burgers, which is why they turn up so often in cheap orders. More on the cheapest ways to order here.
