Whopper vs Big Mac Size, Price and Kilojoules

The Whopper and the Big Mac compared on price, weight, kilojoules and what is actually in them. One is clearly bigger.

3 minute read

The Whopper against Big Mac comparison gets made constantly and almost always on vibes. The two burgers are less alike than the rivalry suggests, and once you put the actual figures side by side the differences are structural rather than a matter of taste.

A Whopper is $12.35 and 2,437 kJ, with 28.1g of protein, 45.2g of fat, 46.6g of carbs and 846mg of sodium. Those are Hungry Jack's published figures for the Australian product. Comparing Whopper size, price and kilojoules against a Big Mac fairly means acknowledging that one is a single large patty burger and the other is a double small patty burger with a third piece of bread in it. The full Whopper page is here.

Three structural differences decide everything else: the patty count, the middle bun, and the cooking method. Each one changes what you get in a way the marketing never mentions.

One Big Patty Against Two Small Ones

A Whopper is built on a single quarter pound patty. A Big Mac uses two smaller patties. That sounds like a detail and it changes the eating substantially: two thin patties give you two seared surfaces where one thick patty gives you one, so a Big Mac carries more crust per gram of beef.

The Whopper answer to that is the Double Whopper at $16.45 and 3,543 kJ, which puts two patties in the same build and pushes protein from 28.1g to 47.4g. That is the closer structural comparison, though it is not the burger anyone means when they say Whopper.

The Middle Bun Is the Real Difference

A Big Mac has three pieces of bread. A Whopper has two. That middle bun is the single most distinctive thing about a Big Mac and it does two jobs: it separates the two patties so they do not slide, and it soaks up sauce that would otherwise run.

A Whopper solves the same sliding problem with cheese in the Whopper Cheese at $13.30, which is why that version outsells the plain one. Melted cheese between the salad and the patty binds the build the way a middle bun does, without adding bread.

The consequence shows up in the carbohydrate column. A Whopper carries 46.6g of carbs against 28.1g of protein. Anyone eating with an eye on that ratio should look at the Grill Masters range instead, where a Grill Masters Angus, Bacon & Cheese runs 31.3g of carbs against 50.8g of protein.

Flame Grill Against Griddle

This is the difference that actually decides the taste argument. A Whopper patty is cooked over an open flame, so fat drips and burns underneath and the smoke rises back into the meat. A Big Mac patty is cooked on a flat griddle in its own fat.

Neither is better in the abstract. A griddle produces a more even crust and a cleaner beef flavour; a flame produces smoke and char. Which you prefer is genuinely a preference, and it is why this argument has run for fifty years without resolving.

What is not a preference: smoke is an aroma rather than a taste, and aroma fades as food cools. A Whopper eaten fifteen minutes after buying it loses considerably more than a griddled burger does over the same time. That is worth knowing if you are driving home.

The Salad Does More Work in a Whopper

A Whopper carries lettuce, tomato, raw onion and pickles. That is four cold, wet or sharp elements against one hot patty, and it is deliberate. The tomato and lettuce go on cold and stay cold, so the first bite runs hot against cool. The raw onion is sharp rather than sweet, cutting the mayonnaise before it gets heavy.

A Big Mac's salad is shredded lettuce, onion and pickle with a sauce that carries most of the flavour. It is a sauce forward burger; a Whopper is a salad forward one. That is the clearest way to describe the difference to someone who has not eaten both.

If you want the Whopper build with more beef and less bread, the Ultimate Double Whopper at $18.05 is the version most people mean. The full Whopper range is here.
