About the Hungry Jack's Miniccino

A Jack's Cafe Miniccino is $2.50 and 501 kJ, and it is the cheapest item on the entire Jack's Cafe menu. Warm frothed milk with a chocolate dusting, and no coffee in it at all.

It exists for children, and it is one of the better small ideas on the Hungry Jack's menu. A child sitting at a table while adults have coffee gets a warm drink in a proper cup that looks like what the adults are having, without caffeine.

At $2.50 it undercuts everything else on the cafe menu by a wide margin, which is appropriate given it is milk and a dusting of chocolate.

The energy figure of 501 kJ comes from the milk and the chocolate together, and it sits comfortably below any of the milk coffees.

Some Australian cafes call this a babycino, which is the more common term nationally. Hungry Jack's uses Miniccino for the same drink.

Who it suits: children, straightforwardly. It also works for anyone who wants something warm without caffeine and finds hot chocolate too heavy at 861 kJ.

How to Make the Hungry Jack's Miniccino at Home?

Frothed milk and chocolate, and the only technique is not overheating it. A drink for a child needs to be drinkable immediately. Makes 1 serving.

100 ml full cream milk
1 pinch drinking chocolate
1 marshmallow optional and non negotiable in most households

Method

1. Steam or froth the milk to around 50C rather than the usual 60C. A child cannot wait for a drink to cool and a scalded mouth ruins the exercise.
2. Introduce plenty of air. A miniccino should be mostly foam, which is what makes it fun.
3. Pour into a small cup.
4. Dust generously with drinking chocolate.
5. Add a marshmallow on the side if that is the household you are running.

Tips

50C, not 60C. This is a drink that gets consumed immediately or not at all.
More foam than a cappuccino. The foam is the whole appeal at that age.
A proper small cup rather than a plastic one. Half the point is that it looks like what the adults have.

Variations

Add a shot of espresso and it becomes a small Cappuccino.
Chocolate stirred through the milk rather than dusted makes a small Hot Chocolate.
Use warm milk with no froth for a child who dislikes foam, which is most of them at first.

Serve immediately at drinking temperature, with a marshmallow if you value peace.
